Jesus Said He Didn’t Know When the World Ends. The Creed Says He Was Wrong.

In the shadow of Holy Week, 457, the bishop of Alexandria fled in terror, making his desperate last stand at the sacred baptismal font. For six turbulent years, Proterius had held the city’s highest altar, a throne handed to him by the emperor, with no vote from his flock. When the Council of Chalcedon stripped the beloved previous bishop of his office, imperial soldiers marched into Alexandria to install Proterius and force a new, hated definition of Christ upon the province. The city marked him a traitor and waited.

When the emperor died earlier that year, the shadow of imperial power vanished with him, and Alexandria erupted. Opponents of the council immediately consecrated their own bishop, a fiery monk forged in years of defiance. Within two months, the seething populace cornered Proterius. Trapped inside the sanctuary, he retreated into the inner baptistery, trusting the holy waters to shield him from ultimate sacrilege. They slaughtered him beside the font anyway.

What followed was brutal: the mob dragged his bloody corpse into the streets, paraded it through the city, dismembered it, burned the remains, and scattered his ashes to the wind. Alexandria, a glittering metropolis of grand libraries and sprawling harbors, had lynched its own bishop during the holiest days of the Christian calendar. Proterius and his murderers bowed to the same Savior. Their fatal rift boiled down to a single word.

Today’s exclusive content begins after the Sources and Further Reading section and goes back to what Paul’s generation said Jesus was before any council existed.

Why a Roman Emperor Cared About the Inner Life of Jesus

Once the Council of Nicaea declared in 325 that the Son was fully God, a problem followed that the bishops hadn’t planned for. If Jesus was God, how did a God get hungry, tire out on a dusty road, and die on a cross? Two schools of thought produced two answers, and each treated the other as a heretic. The school centered in Antioch kept the divine and human sides of Jesus so far apart that critics said he’d been split into two people sharing one name. The school centered in Alexandria fused them so tightly that critics said the human side had dissolved, leaving a God wearing a costume.

Both camps had bishops, monks, and crowds willing to use their fists. In an empire where the faith had become the glue holding the state together, a church that couldn’t agree on what Jesus was counted as a security problem, and Marcian treated it as one. The bishops at Chalcedon got their marching orders as drafters of a sentence that both camps could sign without admitting defeat, and that requirement shaped everything about the wording.

What the Chalcedon Definition Says and What It Declines to Say

The text says Jesus is one person who exists in two natures, a divine one and a human one, “without confusion, without change, without division, without separation.” Read those four phrases slowly and they turn out to be a list of banned answers. The first two outlaw the Alexandrian habit of blending the natures into something new. The last two outlaw the Antiochene habit of treating them as two separate beings sharing a body.

The bishops knew precisely what couldn’t be said and had nothing to put in the middle except the demand that it somehow be true. The definition never explains how one mind holds a finite human point of view and infinite divine knowledge at the same moment. It insists on both and fences off every explanation anyone had tried. A pastor who goes looking for the mechanism finds a fence with nothing inside it, and the usual response is to call the empty space a mystery and move on to the offering.

The Gospel Verses That Refuse to Sort Themselves

The trouble starts in the texts the council was supposed to be explaining. In Mark, Jesus pushes back when someone calls him good, because only God is good (Mark 10:18). Luke says he grew in wisdom as a boy (Luke 2:52), a strange thing to say about a being who already knew everything. Hebrews says he learned obedience through what he suffered (Hebrews 5:8), and in the garden the night before his death he prays that the Father’s will be done in place of his own. On the cross he asks God why he’s been abandoned, which in a Trinity means one member of the Godhead putting that question to another member, or to himself.

Every verse that shows weakness goes in the human column, and every verse that shows power goes in the divine column. The method looks tidy until somebody notices that the sentence “I don’t know the day” has a single speaker, and the creed says that speaker is the Son who knows everything. Pope Gregory the Great (who led the Western church around the year 600) answered that Jesus knew the day in his human nature but not from his human nature. That was an official ruling, and nobody has managed to explain the difference to a layperson without losing the room.

Many later manuscripts of Matthew’s version of the saying (Matthew 24:36) leave out the words “nor the Son,” and textual scholars have long read the omission as scribes who found the phrase too embarrassing to keep copying. A monk with a pen could make the problem vanish in one line, which a council with five hundred bishops never managed.

Who Was in the Tomb on Saturday

The sorting method creates a worse problem at the cross. A divine being can’t die, so the divine side of Jesus stayed alive while the human side died. But the definition insists on one person, not two, which means that one person both died and didn’t. A believer who says “God died for our sins” is saying something only half true by the logic of the definition, and a believer who says only the man died has split Jesus in two, which is the exact error the fourth phrase of the creed forbids. The church spent generations arguing over which phrasing was safe to say out loud in a sermon.

Roughly 230 years after Chalcedon, the Third Council of Constantinople (680-681) had to rule that Jesus possessed two wills, one human and one divine, because the 451 text left open whether the man praying in the garden could want something the God didn’t. A statement written to end an argument needed a follow-up council to say what it had meant, and the follow-up leaves a question of its own about which will was in charge when the two disagreed. The official answer is that they never disagreed, which makes the garden prayer a very odd thing for a man with a divine will built in.

The Churches That Walked Out and Never Came Back

The churches of Egypt, Ethiopia, Armenia, and Syria rejected Chalcedon in 451 and still do. Tens of millions of Christians belong to them today, with the Coptic Church in Egypt the best known. They affirm that Jesus is fully divine and fully human, the same thing Chalcedon claims, and what they objected to was the wording that spoke of him existing “in” two natures. They preferred “out of” two natures. A single preposition kept whole churches out of communion with each other for most of fifteen centuries.

That undercuts the standard line that Christianity has always taught one thing about Jesus. Christians in Egypt, among the oldest churches anywhere, have been telling Rome and Constantinople for fifteen hundred years that the 451 wording went wrong, and the unity the emperor wanted from the council never arrived. What arrived was a permanent split in the church, and it was built into the creed from the first day.

The Question the Bishops Wanted Off the Table

A definition this hard to hold together raises the question the bishops at Chalcedon had every reason to keep out of the room: what did the earliest Christians say Jesus was before anyone needed a definition? The oldest surviving Christian writings don’t read the way the creed does, and the council held two years before Chalcedon, in 449, ended with a bishop dying on the road to exile.
