Long before the Hebrew Bible became the holy book of one god, ancient Israelite religion was soaked in the gods of its neighborhood—Canaanite deities, Mesopotamian motifs, and Egyptian rituals. Yahweh didn’t start as a lonely king of the heavens. He rose to power in a crowded divine universe. What we now call “monotheism” only came after centuries of religious cleanup, editing, and spin control.
